Re: RAI treatment for hyperthyroid disease
Hi
My name is Anabel. I guess this is kind of late but I thought I'll answer anyways since other people might be going through the same ordeal. I just foud this web-site and when I read many of your e-mails I felt that I was going back in time. I defenitely will like to help answer some of your quetions. On August 2001 I decided to undergo radiation treatment for my hyperthyroidism since PTU treatment was not working for me. Before that, I almost die from cardial arrest. I guess that scared me a lot and that's why I decided to use RAI.
Anyway, after radiation treatment you will feel very tired for a couple of days. You still will need to use PTU since it takes a while for your thyroid to loose its activity. Afrer 3 months, I started feeling symptoms of a slow thyroid and that is when I started taking thyroid hormone. It takes about a year before your doctor can figure out what the correct dose for you will be. So, be patient, it will happen and you will feel much better. There are ups and downs since your are always taking the same dose. Sometimes your body might need more hormone and you will feel more tired and there will be days in which you will have a lot of energy.
Well, this is getting too long but if you have any other questions don't hesitate to write.
