The composition of bile is:

- bile salts 12 g/L (grams per Litre)
- electrolytes 9 g/L
- phospholipids 5 g/L
- proteins 2 g/L
- cholesterol 1 g/L
- bilirubin 0.2 g/L

The primary electrolyte is bicarbonate constituents serves for alkalinizing the intestinal contents. As bile flows through the bile ducts it is modified by addition of a watery, bicarbonate-rich secretion from ductal epithelial cells.
