Re: Cholesterol, mine has gone up
According to the institute of medicine at the national academy of sciences, trans fat (as well as saturated fat and dietary cholesterol) all raise blood ldl cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol).
Moreover, there is some evidence that intake of trans fats lowers hdl cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol).
Trans fats are found in margarine, vegetable shortening, ice-cream, pudding mixes, ready-made pies, cakes and cake mixes, biscuits, pizza, potato chips, fritters, doughnuts, gravy and sauce mixes, artificial creamers, confectionery and other processed foods, including many foods marketed to children such as sugary breakfast cereals.
How can you avoid harmful trans fats? When shopping, always carefully check the package label for the list of ingredients.
If you see such terms as "hydrogenated vegetable oil," "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil," "vegetable shortening" or "margarine," these products contain trans fats — and you should think twice before taking one off the shelf and putting it into your shopping cart.
