I also consumed a lot of artificial sweeteners before things went bad for me, specifically Diet Coke (aspartame). But again, I really can't imagine that that was too much to blame, because I see women in my office who are twice my age and who drink coffee filled with garbage like Sweet & Low and Splenda all day every day, and who are in better health than me, a former athlete.
To make an analogy, I imagine that artificial sweeteners and junk food are kind of like gasoline vapor in that they don't do much harm alone, but introduce a lit match ( Antibiotics or heavy metals) and you will go up in smoke.
