 Yes, I once asked Hv, I think it was about licorice root, they said with food also. Hv said no. I was just curious if there is a general view, especially about amino acids.

The reason for empty stomach with most supplements is simple.  More efficient absorption and quicker absorption.  Fats and proteins in particular will slow the absorption of herbs and supplements and can proteins can block the absorption of certain minerals and amino acids.

Certain herbs should not be taken on an empty stomach though, such as very irritating herbs like African birdseye cayenne or strongly stimulatory herbs such as guarana, kola nut (bissy nut), ephedra, sida cordifolia, etc.
