Off topic but another example of profiteering but in the pet care business is a pricey product by Bayer Chemical called Advantage Flea control.
Bayer also makes a product you can buy at Home Depot called Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect control which contains the exact same active ingredient and a $20 quart of this will last the lifetime of your animal with identical results. I know this first hand from a puppy mill I used to associate with where it was used to successfully control fleas on about 50 adult dogs and still is today http://www.trinitybayaussies.com/.
Bayer found out what people were doing to avoid the price of their Advantage product so they reformulated it and it now contains an additional fertilizer FREE! The fertilizer will burn the animals skin. You can still sometimes find the original formula without the free fertilizer by looking behind the newly stocked containers.
