Re: PMS problems
Hello!
I want to thank you for sharing your personal journey of health. That is what health truly is--a journey. Sometimes we take the wrong road/path...but it is never too late to turn around and move in a better direction!
I don't know why, but out of all the posts that I've read this evening, I feel compelled to respond to yours... Perhaps because I, too, have been on a similar road as you, in the past, and I could very much relate to your need for answers and for advice.
I started on my own path of discovery to good health at age 25. That was the first time I started to have mild panic attacks right before the onset of my period (usually a day before). I had never experienced such anxiety before, and it forever changed me. Initially, I went to my doctor and told him about the anxiety that I was experiencing, and he immediatly wrote out a prescription for Zoloft. Come to think of it, I think I was the one that actually suggested the Zoloft...as I was too uneducated and naive at the time to realize that that was NOT what was going to help "fix" me or cure me. Nevertheless, I apprehensively started taking zoloft. It only lasted for 5 days. I knew once I began (the low dose) that it was not for me. I felt nauseous and just out of it. I stopped taking the anti-anxiety meds right then and there, because I knew that I didn't want a future of being on synthetic meds. Afterall, I was still so young...only 25.
And that's truly when my search and discovery quest began. And I started reading and researching on everything pms and anxiety related. I learned SO much along the way. I am now 31 years old, and am still always seeking ways to better improve and maintain my health. I feel as though I have a wealth of information that I acquired throughout the years...and I wanted to share some of that info with you. Hopefully it will help you a bit, and show you that you're not alone, and that there is hope for better, improved health. It just takes time. Baby steps, as many people have said here on Curezone :) You have to be willing and able to "surrender" and to allow yourself the experience to heal. You have to first and foremost come from a place of self-love, and forgiveness...and acceptance. And from there, with a more humble and open mind and heart, you will find that there's so much hope for whatever dis-ease that you may be currently experiencing. It just takes time. Patience. Love. Lots and lots of LOVE (for yourself)...and positivity and balance to surround you during this journey towards better health. :)
I still get PMS every single month, but it is nothing like it once was...and my anxiety is much less than what it was back in my mid to late 20's. My symptoms have ebbed and flowed over the years, as that is what has naturally occured with my hormones. (once you approach your 30's, progesterone levels decline). But as I said, I am still learning, and forever continuing my journey to educate myself and discover better ways to alleviate my PMS and to better improve my overall health and wellbeing.
This is what has helped me for my PMS...
* a good Multi-vitamin, with extra supplementation of:
- B Vitamins (I take the Hi-Health brand "Mega Super Stress" B Vitamin blend...it is wonderful, and has plenty of all of the B's that we need!)
- 1000 mg's of Vitamin C (I like either the Hi-Health brand or the Whole Foods brand. Either way, Vitamin C at 1000 mg's is not hard to come by).
- 2000 IU's of Vitamin D (I use the Hi-Health brand)
- Taurine (about 1000 mg's/day), a very important amino acid which helps stimulate BILE production from the gallbladder...which helps cleanse the Liver from becoming sluggish and stuck with toxins and build up
- Methionine (I use the Hi-Health brand), another important [sulphuric] amino acid which helps cleanse & detoxify the liver, as well as help boost mood (by helping produce higher levels of serotonin), in turn, helping to reduce anxiety
-MAGNESIUM (VERY important!!) I love the brand "Natural Calm" which I purchase either at Whole Foods or Hi-Health. You can purchase a box of 30 individual packets of powdered magnesium (about 300mg's of your daily dose), and I try to take one packet each night. I simply boil some hot water in the kettle and fill my mug about half way and then stir in the fizzy magnesium powder. Magnesium is WONDERFUL for anxiety, cramps, sleep problems, and also it helps aid and balance the absorption of Calcium. When I first started experiencing my panick attacks and anxiety back in my mid to late 20s, I realized that I was very much magnesium deficient. Once I started religiously supplementing with Magnesium, my monthly cramps subsided...my heart palpitations subsided...I began to sleep better...and most importantly, I began to feel LESS anxiety! It really helped me a lot. So many people are magnesium deficient. Especially women. Stress depletes the body of magnesium big time!
* Omega 3's...in the form of either healthy cooked fish twice a week, along with daily "snacking" on a handful of walnuts (I get mine at the grocery store, in the baking aisle as they come in whole form, and seem to be cheaper than buying them in the "snack"/gourmet aisle...)
* Aloe Vera Juice. I use the "Aloe Gold" brand that I get at Whole Foods, and I take a small swig of it every night before I go to bed. Probably about a teaspoons worth. I don't take too much, as it will cause diarrhea if taken in excess. The Aloe helps with candida, and helps normalize stomach acids and intestinal health.
* Probiotics. I take a small enteric covered "pearl" size probiotic each day. You can find the "Pearl" brand, or similar type brands at Walmart or any supermarket or healthfood store. I find that Walmart's "Pearl" acidopholus brand is the cheapest. Probiotics are very important for intestinal health, maintaining a healthy immune system, by helping to kill of the bad bacteria in our intestines.
* I did my first
Colon Cleanse when I was 26 years old, as I just intuitively felt like my body needed a good internal cleaning (it had never had one before!) I was climbing to almost 130
pounds at 5'4", and after the colon cleanse, I dropped 5 pounds, and felt AMAZING afterwards. The cleanse was a 30 day cleanse, and required a bit of effort and staying power. But it was well worth it in the end. My skin had never looked better, and my PMS symptoms drastically improved! The things that came out of me via bowel movements were shocking, and I was so relieved and HAPPY to no longer harbor all of that nasty build up that had been in my colon for so long. My energy significantly improved after that first colon cleanse.
I used the barnd "Dr. Natura" as I do believe it is one of the BEST colon cleansing and detox systems out there! It is a bit pricey (about $80), but well worth the results. After my first colon cleanse, I made a vow to myself to always do an annual
Colon Cleanse and detox. I would say try Dr. Natura 30 day colon cleanse, and then do another 30 day cleanse a year later.
* I then stepped down from needing to do such drastic colon cleansing to a more gentle detox... which I do for my body about twice a year. I love the brand "RENEW LIFE" as they have very gentle two week and 30 day herbal cleanses that you help detox all the major channels of elimination. I highly recommend their 15 day First Time Gentle Cleanse for beginners of Renew Life products. I do this cleanse once a year...usually every January. They have many other wonderful cleanses that are reasonably priced.
* Coffee Enemas. I do about one every 4 months. I cannot begin to put to words how I feel after one. It's like the most serene and calm wave that comes over my entire body afterwards. And I've only just become familiar with
coffee enemas in the past 2 years. Google "Coffee Enema" to learn more about the amazing effects that a
coffee enema can have on the body (cleansing and detoxifying the liver, first and foremost)!
* Chiropractic. I started getting chiropractic adjustments at age 26 also, because my spine was a little out of whack and had a few subluxations that I did not realize was hindering my health and wellbeing. Chiropractic is wonderful for SO MANY disorders and ailments...and it really can help improve PMS symptoms. I started out going 3 times a week, because at the time, I needed that many visits to help the issue that I was having with my spine...but eventually, as my spine began to come into perfect alignment (meaning: nervous system (nerve endings) was "communicating" and msg's were "flowing freely" to each organ) I only needed to have a monthly adjustment--for maintenance...or a "tune up" as I like to call it :) Chiropractic really helped me A LOT, and I highly recommend finding a well experienced Chiropractor who has a thriving and established practice and who has been around a while (does not need to feel like snatching up all of your annual visits that insurance allows).
* Massage Therapy. This goes hand in hand with Chiropractic care. Many chiro offices/practices work directly with massage therapists. Take advantage of the lower rates that many LMT's, who work side by side with Chiropractors, offer. Often times their rates are HALF of what you would pay at a spa or a Massage Envy. Massage is wonderful for overall health and keeping your immune system strong. Massage therapy not only significantly reduces stress (by reducing cortisol levels in your system), but it also helps lift your Spirit...because you are taking that time to relax and do something positive for YOU and only YOU.
* And lastly, good old fashioned exercise. I like to run on the treadmill for 30 minutes about 4 times a week... and when the weather is nice, I love to take a beautiful jog outside. I also try to do yoga twice a week. Nothing fancy. Just a 40 minute routine that I have memorized over the years from a beginners yoga DVD that I purchased at Borders. Sometimes I listen to beautiful instrumental music while doing yoga...and other times I will listen to my ocean waves dreamsurf relaxation CD (just the sound of ocean waves)...and other times I will simply light a candle and be in silence. What's important is that I'm taking the TIME for yoga, and to find that feeling of centerdness & balance.
* Surround yourself with positivity! :) Positive thoughts! Positive people! Positive environment! Read positive encouraging words! Journal! And know in your mind, body, and Spirit, that you can do anything you want. Our bodies have an innate ability to heal. Our bodies were essentially MADE for HEALING, and HEALTH. It is never too late. Never. Don't ever give up hope on your health. There are so many options out there that don't have to require drugs or synthetics. Drugs have their place. They always will. But they don't always have to be the "choice." Being courageous enough to step back and to really get to the root of our issues is so important. Taking the TIME for our bodies so that we may CREATE health, is vital. Taking our health into our own hands and learning to be RESPONSIBLE for our health...and to learn to ask for HELP when help is needed, and to keep an open mind to ALL options is so important. These are all "baby steps"... Know that you CAN change your path...and that your body CAN heal and help itself. Your body is the most amazing and complex and intricate MIRACLE that has been gifted to you. If you believe in your heart that you can get in the drivers seat and steer your mind, body, and Spirit to optimal health--then you WILL. And you will be HONORING your temple as it was made to be honored. Because when our health thrives--so does our Spirit. And everything becomes clearer & more hopeful when our Spirit feels nourished, honored, and balanced.
* SMILE :) And offer your body words of encouragement as you begin to steer your health down a better path. Your body will give to you a thousand-fold in good if you give to it the proper love, care, and nourishment it deserves and requires.
ALL of these things helped me on my personal journey to better health. And I genuinely hope they help you, and anyone else who took the time to read this.
To good health!
Blessings,
