Ideas for teaching people about nutrition

A couple of suggestions for teaching old dogs new tricks:

1. Introduce them to new concepts slowly and always with positive statements. Statements that sound like judgement turn people off immediately.

2. Try asking questions like "would you like to hear what I think?" or "may I share with you my perspective?" and then try making your perspective sound really fun. For example: "I've been making this juice with such and such in it and it is sooo tasty and I feel soooo much better now that I'm drinking it and this is how it's helped me... Maybe we can make juice together or I could buy a juicer for you for your birthday.".

Then once they're juicing and enjoying it, you add the next step. "did you know that there are tons of pestisides on non organic foods that could be making you sick?". Then let that concept settle in... Then the next time you talk you might mention how great your organic fruits and veggies taste and how whenever you eat veggies that aren't organic you notice a huge difference in flavor. (who doesn't want better flavor?)

I've been slowly working on my dad this way and I'm currently sitting here watching him make a GIANT batch of juice with superfood in it. :). Yeah, so what if he added protein powder in it as well? Baby steps. Maybe in a little while I might say, "Ya know, I bet it would be easier for your body to assimilate the natural nutrients in your superfood vs. the synthetic nutrients in your protein powder and I'm not sure if you need it. I bet you have all the protein that you need in the superfood.". And then let that idea settle in. You want to give them enough time between new suggestions to where they feel like they came up with the idea themselves. Or maybe they know that you encouraged the idea, but where they are allowed the space to get comfortable with it before they try it.

Food for thought.
