Re: nebulizer with hydrogen peroxide or sliver

I am not a doctor, but am a respiratory therapist with many years of experience treating patients with emphysema. So, my reply is solely my opinion and you should always seek medical advice from your doctor or pulmonary specialist.
Please do not nebulize hydrogen peroxide or any other material that is not recommended by your physician. Please know that any damage done to the lung tissue, alveoli can not be restored. Reversal of emphysema is impossible. You can, however, stop the progression of emphysema. Especially emphysema caused by smoking, recurrent exposure to pollutants, or recurrent episodes of infections. The key is to halt or slow down the progression, and then treat the symptoms. I don't know the cause of your emphysema. I do know how to treat the symptoms and improve your tolerance of activities of daily living. With the progression of emphysema patients will, because of shortness of breath, mucus production, and other factors, become less active. What happens is that your body becomes less and less efficient with using oxygen and becomes a mass producer of carbon dioxide. Besides the bronchodilators, inhaled steroids and other medications to treat the symptoms, your body needs to become more efficient. This takes two things...changing your diet and increasing your exercise. The best results of improved activity and improvement in pulmonary function testing results is enrolling in a pulmonary rehab program. Pulmonary rehab is physical therapy for the lungs. You will receive education classes and materials and placed on a mild exercise program. This really has been shown to improve your life living with emphysema. You don't have to be old, on oxygen or needing a lung transplant to be in the rehab program. Just a referral from your physician.
I understand you want to use alternative therapies to help treat your emphysema. Some alternative therapies have been shown to work for some people. Everybody is different. But please be careful when nebulizing or inhaling anything into the lungs. This includes your current prescription medications. Tweet
