I found that with the high setting it was too strong and occasionaly had silver dregs floating around and had to strain it. Like you, I take a lot more now that it is not so expensive.
I do not know if any other rods can be used. Some of my research says that round rods will produce smaller particles than flat ones, but who knows? I looked around the net and on Ebay and see lots of rods and some spools 36" long and with .9999 purity. It would seem to me that any of those could be tweaked for ease of use.
Since 4 flat rods came with my Silvergen and I only use 2 at a time, I will probably just stick with what I have for now. I looked on the Silvergen web site and found this for the model I have, the SG6:
