Re: Hormones In Food: Should You Worry?

Of course the food industry will say that no, there is no impact. However, it has been proved that the chemicals used to clean or make plastic bottlesmimic oestrogen, which has had a negative impact on men's bodies (soon they will be wearing shoes for women). Growth hormones in animals has also been linked to an increase in breast cancer among women. Once you start messing around with nature, there is always, always a negative impact somewhere down the line.

That is not what the article was saying.  They actually point out that there are dangers from the hormones in food and plasticizers, but that there are other contributing factors as well.

The only hormone that they said showed no reasonable effect was the rBGH, which may be true.  If we do not have receptors that the hormone can activate then it would not have an effect.  On the other hand this does not mean it is by any means safe.  It has been found that rBGH raises the risk of mastitis resulting in the increased use of antibiotics in the animals and thus more antibiotics in the milk, which can cause health problems.  And even if the rBGH does not activate any receptors in our body this does not mean that it cannot affect other hormone levels in the cow that end up in the milk and do have effects on human cells. This last part is hypothetical, but is still a possibility and needs to be researched.
