Re: Son's allergies & adrenals
I had posted about my son's stomach issues (clear endoscopy, potential hiatal hernia, etc.). We've had some developments that are confusing/concerning.
First, his reflux seems to have strangely (but thankfully) faded away in the past month other than if there is some constipation (it was almost constant before). The only thing I can connect this to is the going off of his allergy desensitization drops. We did this to help get a clear picture of what is going on. Is it possible that exposure to his allergens via the drops could CAUSE more problems rather than help things (keeping in mind his biggest allergy symptom is stomach issues)?
It would help if I knew what the drops were. There are homeopathics, then there are antihistamine drugs or immune suppressants for allergies.
I will say that his dust allergy reactions have gotten worse since he has been off the drops, so I am confused. I wonder if one symptom can get worse and one get better?
There are several possibilities. Some possibilities will depend on what the drops are. Another possibility is that coming off the drops could be allowing more allergic reactions, which can further weaken already weakened adrenals. Basically the adrenals will be working extra hard trying to counter the exposure to the allergens.
We have begun an elimination diet and it seems he has Oral Allergy Syndrome (he has plenty of grass, tree, etc. allergies). What concerns me is that we have yet to find a fruit, vegetable, or herb he does not react to. He gets mouth, throat, and ear reactions to foods- his hands go numb if he touches the stuff, too- even stevia. He lives on chicken, millet, and butter currently.
Could the oral allergy syndrome have come up as a result of stopping the drops?
Yes, as explained above. Although depending again on what the drops are they may have also been contributing to the underlying cause of the allergies.
I am just thinking if the dust allergy got worse, maybe the tree/greasses allergies also got worse and is manifested through the fruits and veggies.
I know we must strengthen his adrenals- but what could he possibly tolerate?
Watercress would be a great choice since it is very nutritious, supports the adrenal glands and also happens to be an excellent antihistamine.
You can also save the skins from yellow onions to cook in his foods again for its antihistamine effects.
Other than that the best thing to do would be to experiment with adaptogenic herbs using them one at a time so you know what he does or does not react to. The primary herbs I recommend focusing on to start with are watercress, nettle leaf, schisandra berry, amla and Chinese licorice root.
If this does not work then the other suggestion would be to have him take some coleus forskohlii before meals or taking any herbs. Coleus acts as an antihistamine and antileukotriene. This would allow him to get more nutrition and to take adrenal supporting substances without triggering allergic reactions that can weaken the adrenals further.
We're trying to expand his diet enough to prevent constipation and are getting nowhere fast. Can you suggest how we get such an allergic kid ahead of this curve?
Constipation can have a number of causes.
Would homeopathy or accupuncture help in a case like this?
These are worth a try. They are not going to make things worse and anything that can counter his allergic reactions enough to allow the adrenals to build up is a plus.
I will certainly test the herbs you have suggested for adrenals before- I have them all in the house- but doubting he'll tolerate them, I wanted to ask about Plan B.
A few other things that can help is to include TMG and zinc (without copper) to his supplements to reduce histamine levels.
