Re: D- and DL-phenylalanine

i was gonna post in the depression forum, but it looks kinda dead over there :P i was just wondering which do you think is the best supplement to take between these? (D-phenylalanine DL-phenylalanine or l-phenylalanine)i want it for mostly boosting dopamine.

Both DL-phenylalanine or L-phenylalanine will work, but it takes several weeks to build up.  But phenylalanine can raise blood pressure in a few rare individuals.  It also needs to be avoided by those with phenylketonuria (PKU).  But PKU is a very rare genetic disorder so people are born with it and would know if they have it.

Tyrosine is a good alternative since phenylalanine breaks down in to tyrosine before forming dopamine.

When doing amino acid therapy it is important to take them on an empty stomach since amino acids compete for absorption.  If taken with other amino acid sources the larger amino acids that share receptors will block the smaller amino acids using these same receptors from being absorbed.  Therefore they are best taken at least 30 minutes before meals and not with large amounts of other amino acids that can block their absorption.
