Peter was a fisherman when he met Jesus. A normal type of life. Was he broken when he met Jesus? I would say no, but he followed Him anyway. He came to Jesus just as he was.

It was when the world came against him that he denied Christ 3 times and then realized he needed a higher power to save him. I believe it was at that time Peter's eyes were opened to the truths that Jesus had been trying to teach him all along.
