I should probably clarify my post above about keeping the ten commandments being legalism.

Legalism is thinking anything we do, including keeping the commandments, or keeping any of God's laws, is going to earn salvation. Or thinking that anything done in our own efforts will bring favor from God in any way.

It's all about His grace. We all fall short, and none of us can keep the commandments perfectly, none of us can live up to God's call for us to be perfectly righteous.

We have salvation, and favor from God from His grace alone. His grace is how we are able to keep any of the commandments with true motives.

Nothing from our own efforts pleases God. What pleases God is Himself and Himself working in us. He is making us good because he loves us. And so because of His love we will do good works, or righteous things.
