They are three separate things made into a salad. Fresh figs are really sweet and very dense nutritionally. I have a large fig tree that fruits in summer, and they are delicious.
There are several varieties, some figs are ripe when still green on the outside, and some are purple skinned when ripe. The best way to tell ripeness is by feel and smell. A ripe fig will have a sweet smell, and be quite soft to the touch, not hard.
You can also used dried figs if you can't get fresh ones. Dried figs are also wonderful to put into casseroles.
With figs, a little is good, and a lot is very good if you happen to be a bit constipated :)
