Hidden costs of coal and oil toxins? anyone?
I am doing some research into the hidden, unreported, costs of coal and oil.
For instance most people don't realize that the majority of the mercury now contaminating our oceans comes from mining, processing, and burning coal for fuel. Those processes release the mercury that is trapped inside the coal. And that mercury finds its way into our groundwater, our lakes are rivers and ultimately into the oceans.
The cost of this is measurable in terms of jobs and dollars etc.
We now warn pregnant women not to eat tuna for fear her unborn child will be poisoned by mercury.
a formerly abundant food resource has been poisoned
Tens of thousands of good paying fisherman jobs are lost
People poisoned by mercury do not report to work, their production value as members of the economy drops significantly
That is just one example I can think of about the hidden costs of coal
Can anyone think of other hidden costs of coal and/or oil that don't get talked about very much?
