I think the fact that the NIV says 'sins' instead of 'faults' shows the Catholic influence in that translation.
They of course want you to tell them your sins in the confession booth so that they can get you to pay them to forgive you.

There was a time when the Catholic church would kill to keep the word of God from people. Now that they've made so many changes they don't seem to mind.
