No it isn't common but when it does happen it appears to be more of a gnawing pain.
The pain pattern doesn't indicate an obstruction of the biliary which tends to be higher back toward the right shoulder. These pains around the rib margins and just beneath the shoulder blades indicate a mechanical problem and the pin pricks are usually associated with nerves. Have you had a spinal injury or something similar that may help to explain your condition? These are alternative things that you need to explore.
