Most likely there is a large concentration of yeast around the liver area. The skin looking clumps could have been candida too. They will tend to clump together for "protection" when they are being killed and removed.
In a normal, healthy gut - there is a certain number of "good" bacteria - a few "bad" bacteria and some yeasts and fungi. It is a balance.
When too many anti-biotics ans such are used - it kills the bacteria that feeds on the yeast - when the yeast has nothing to keep its numbers down - it grows out of control.
Probiotics are used to add back in good bacteria - yogurt does the same thing. The body will also get good bacteria from foods - BUT - if a person has just too many bad bacteria or too much yeast - then supplementing with probiotics will not help.
In my observation and opinion - clearing out the entire gut bacteria and yeasts allows the body to reset itself to the correct levels.
