Re: Over-dependence on senna?

I will also consider rice bran instead of psyllium- what is your take on flax seed, Hveragerthi? I used to chew them every night before bed, but some how got out of the practice in recent years. I would like to be able to 'heal' my digestive system to the point where I don't have to rely on any kind of stool softener at all.

The only real drawback to flaxseeds are they are a strong goitrogen, so they interfere with thyroid function. Chia seed would be a better choice if you are just looking for a bulk laxative. Adding seaweeds to your diet can also help by holding moisture in the intestines and by supporting the thyroid since hypothyroidism can also lead to constipation.
