Re: Does too much protein in the diet increase cancer risk?
Molly, when I worked for the coroner, I had a call from the local hospital to come in and examine 2 English tourists. They were still alive (all of my patients were usually not), but the reason I was asked if I wanted to examine them, was that they had the first case of scurvy seen in Western Australia in 90 years.
They had been on a surfing and camping trip for the previous 6 months, and ate nothing but meat, bread, eggs and potatoes. They were covered in ulcerations, they were losing their teeth and hair, and were generally in a very poor condition. It was very interesting.
Both recovered, minus a few teeth. What is interesting is that the doctors believed that it was the bread and potatoes that actually stopped the absorption of the small amount of vitamin C from the meat and eggs they were eating.
Probably not all that relevent to this thread, but interesting anyway.
