To keep slaters (this is what we call these guys in Aus), under control, I use oranges cut in half with the pulp removed, (if you juice oranges, keep the orange halves), place the hollow side down around the plants you want to keep the slaters away from. They love these dark hollows and will collect in them. Then you can simply compost the orange halves, in a compost heap away from your food plants, (they are great little workers in the compost heap), or you can remove the orange halves to somewhere the little guys will not cause damage.

I find this a very effective method of controlling these little guys.

Chickens love eating slaters as well, before I plant any seedlings in my vege garden, I let the chickens loose in there for a couple of days, they eat all the bugs, snails etc, dig up the soil beautifully, and even fertilize the soil as they go.
