Removing Root Canal-ed Teeth ... then what?

I have 5 root canals and 2 other teeth that are close to going that route. I read of all the negative effects of the root canals and I've seen in some writings where removal of the root canal teeth is advised. And they are replaced with... what? Or is the space just left empty with no replacement tooth?

Two of the the teeth are my upper front teeth that got knocked out playing hockey when I was 13. The gum above one of them has a black spot thats been there for at least 30 years, I'm assuming thats an infected pocket. I hate having these metal poles drilled into my gums and these porcelain crowns, but what is the alternative??? I've been on the cutting edge for 30 years as far as diet, supplements, alternative treatments, holistic, etc. but most of the time I just feel lousy and tired.
