I have an old root canal with a supposed infection that shows up on xray as a small abscess around the bone where the titanium osseointegration is supposed to take place. It doesn't appear that there is much bone there around the localized tip of the rod on the posterior end.

However, what do you mean by "frequently rot the bone around teeth?" Is this rot from bacteria or some other source? According to a dentist I spoke with, he states bacteria can enter into poorly set root canals and proliferate into a root infection. But, since a root canal changes the environment and blood does not flow to support the root, bacteria make a nice little colony and break down the bone around the root canal area.

The dentist recommended a dental surgeon to clean up the infected site and allow the bone to regrow before attempting any dental work at the site.

Same dentist did state that 50% of root canals eventually may become infected through the course of one's life. Tweet
