Actually, shingles is caused by the member of the herpes family called herpes zoster. It has no connection to the Herpes Papilloma Virus, HPV.
I agree with the advice to get an active outbreak swabbed for, preferably an PCR analysis or perhaps a culture to determine if it's shingles or herpes simplex.
The most effective treatment for either is to use one of the available antivirals, acyclovir, valtrex or famvir. They're all very safe and have dosages for both shingles and HSV.
