First a warning...

Using sodium chlorite solutions topically require precise measurements. Especially with children, and especially with psoriasis.

If your solution is too weak, it will be ineffective. If the solution is too strong, it will cause additional irritation and will make the Psoriasis worse.

Also, the 22.4% concentration of sodium chlorite is dangerous to handle, so take care in preparing the solution being especially alert to avoiding contact with skin, eyes, and to avoid the fumes produced during activation.

Let's start by diluting the 22.4% sodium chlorite solution down to a much safer to handle 5% sodium chlorite solution.

You will need a graduated measuring device that is capable of measuring 10 ml and 50 ml. In this graduated cylinder place 10 ml of the 22.4% sodium chlorite and add enough distilled water to bring the total up to 45 ml.

Before we continue, you must acknowledge that this is not a recommendation, nor is it medical advice, nor am I a medical professional qualified to give medical advice. However, in the course of living life, this has had anecdotal evidence in eliminating skin problems. If you try this, you do so at your own risk. No promises, or guarantees are implied. In studying all of the toxicology of sodium chlorite and chlorine dioxide I will say that there is a very high probability (about 100% [smile icon]) that this application is not lethal.

Now, using this 5% sodium chlorite place 2.5 ml of it into a measuring cup and add 2.5 ml of 10% citric acid . Mix and allow to activate for 10 minutes. Next you are going to add enough water to make a total of 500 ml. Now, since this solution is acidic, you will need to add 0.4 grams of baking soda to buffer the solution closer to a neutral PH. It will still be a little acidic, but not enough to irritate the skin. A slight acid state is necessary to allow the chemical reaction to continue. You will store this out of direct light and in a cooler part of the house out of the reach of children. The shelf life is about 1 month, so put a date on the bottle.

This solution has 150 PPM available chlorine dioxide with about 15 PPM of that as free chlorine dioxide. After adding the baking soda the PH of the solution will be in the 5.5 - 6 range.

To use this solution, get a good supply of cotton balls and take a cotton ball, wet it in the solution and wipe down the infected area and the area around it. Next take a fresh cotton ball, saturate it with the solution and hold it in place over the irritated area using some medical "not too sticky" tape. If the area is large you may have to use gause squares, or you can even use a paper towel in a pinch. The idea is to have the infected area in contact with the solution for 10 - 15 minutes. Then you can take it off and let the area air dry.

Along with this direct attack, there are some indirect additions that you can do. Dip a cotton ball or Q tip into the solution and wipe it around the inside opening of the nose. Also, after washing hands and cleaning under the finger nails, put some of the solution into a finger bath and hold the finger tips in the solution for about 5 minutes.

All of this is done twice a day during the week, and you take the weekend off to let the skin flora return to normal and to give your immune system a chance to fight off any remaining infection or irritation.

You can expect results in as little as a week, but it usually takes a couple of weeks. This is not a long term use, but consider it an emergency response to a sudden flare up.

This is not a "treatment," but you can think of it as a "targeted hygiene enhancement." There are many causes of skin problems, so it is responsible to keep a professional medical person "in the loop."

It is always good to use a camera to document progress. Skin "issues" tend to ebb and flow, so documentation and a journal are helpful in reviewing progress. Also, if things get worse, stop using the solution and schedule a visit with your medical professional.
