When you are fasting or on a very low fat diet the production of bile is greatly reduced since it is not needed in very large amounts. This can cause two things to happen. First of all, the older bile remains in the liver and gallbladder since it is not forced out by fat consumption and can collect toxins and other biliary products and form gallstones. Vegetarians, low fat dieters and those who frequently fast or do extended fasts can actually be more prone to form Gallstones than those who include plenty of healthy plant based fats in their diets. The second factor is that while new bile is not being produced,the pressure in the liver is lowered and the older bile, toxins and stones are not as easily pushed out during a flush.
Fasting is very cleansing for the body, but not conducive to a productive liver flush/cleanse. After fasting for more than a few days (3-7) follow this plan. When breaking the fast begin drinking plenty of apple juice, dilute at first if necessary. The apple juice will help soften existing stones. Also, if you drink natural or even better, fresh pressed apple juice, the pectin will help tone and stimulate the bowels. Try to drink a quart a day of apple juice for three-seven days. Take turmeric supplements (I buy the spice turmeric and put it in empty 00 size gelcaps). Turmeric helps stimulate bile production, cleanses the blood and is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Finally include some healthy fat in your diet. Use a little olive oil with your raw vegetables or toss cooked veggies with the oil, add a splash of fresh lemon juice too for both taste and cleansing benefits. Eat an avocado everyday. It has healthy oil in it. Make sure you have been back on solid foods several days before adding fats, and then add them slowly to gently "wake up" and stimulate bile production.
By following these simple and healthy steps you can increase your chances for a successful and productive Liver Flush after fasting or doing a low fat diet. Another thing to remember, if you are very young or have eaten a healthy balanced diet for the past several years, you may not have many stones or suffer from liver congestion. While you will be a rarity, some people do not have many stones.
