what type of maca is best?

just noticed this post as I am myself searching to get more info on what type of maca to use. After having used the Now brand capsules with so- so results, for the past three weeks I have been using a raw gelatinized concentrated powder form, 6:1, tastes nice, but I wonder if it is actually worth the extra money or if it is mostly clever marketing??? It seems that there are concentrates our there up to 20:1,quite pricey.
Using whole roots instead ( in soup or tea???) has entered my mind, but where do you find them?
I have read that they don't grow well except in the high Andes, don't know how true this is. Or else, why would not more people grow them in their back yard?
