Psychology is neither a religion, nor pseudo-science. It is what is called in the academic world, a soft science. For the most part studies are conducted using scientific method, but there are radicals in this field whose methods are somewhat less than scientific. As with all scientific diciplines, the individual work or study is peer reviewed and given credibility or not, depending on the evidence supplied.

It is interesting to see the similarities between the outward symptoms of schizophrenia, and the outward symptoms of fanatical religious belief, but this is a comparison, not a scientific study, and should be viewed as such.

The genetic component of mental illness, as well as the biochemical component of mental illness, are both being studied at the present time, but as yet there are no firm conclusions, as the data is still being gathered and analysed.
