"The instinct to cry out to God simply is and it is universal"
I disagree, I think its more a need to have a way of expressing surprise, shock, whatever, and god was just a convienient word, as it is infused in our culture and language. It certainly isn't universal. There are many adaptions such as 'Oh my goodness', 'Oh my', or even simply 'OH'. It is not "crying out to god", it is simply a verbal way of expressing an emotion, although a rather unimaginative one.
