Making Kefir Into A Tasty Meal
I have been fermenting my own milk kefir for the last five months and totally enjoying it. I wanted to share some of my experience with others. I got my live kefir grains from the KefirLady.com. I found it easy and fun to experiment with using different periods of fermentation (24-72 hrs). I have noticed that the first time I drank it, I heard a bit of gurgling and noises in my stomach. Overall, my digestive process from start to finish has become easier and more regular.
Passing the multiplying grains on to others has been a lot of fun as well.
Since the beginning I have found that the quickest and easiest way to sweeten kefir is by using Stevia powder or liquid extract (harvested from the stevia plant grown in SA). In addition to stevia, I have tried blending together a number of different elements to give it additional flavor including:
raw cocoa powder
vanilla extract
almond extract
mint extract
cinnamon
frozen blueberries (or other fruits)
fresh bananas (or other fruits)
coconut milk
a fresh raw egg (for extra protein) and nutmeg for an eggnog-like taste
It works best if you mix everything together in a blender to get a smooth, creamy consistency. Using whole and raw milk on occasion, have produced the healthiest, tastiest, creamiest kefir imaginable.
Happy fermenting!
