Re: Water Fasting

I read on your separate blog that you're going in and out of your fast- that's best avoided according to the most credible information I've gleaned on the subject. As you may know, making multiple transitions in and out of the fasting state not only makes things harder over the long term, it can be harmful, and lead to a host of problems.

There are many here more knowledgeable than myself whom you can ask about this. I recommend you ask Chrisb1 here about the implications of starting and stopping as you have done (taking a meal, "eat if you're hungry" as you say, and then resuming the fast). In your blog it seems that you got away with it fine this time, but I think it could get scary if repeated.

If you should at all consider repetition in breaking/restarting your fast again, keep in mind that in the early transition back into ketosis (assuming your meal took you out of it) you'll be sacrificing more lean tissue, and going through the most difficult part (mentally and physiologically) of fasting a second time. Even if you don't slip entirely out of ketosis and through acidosis again on your way back into the fast, it's a considerable stress on your system to switch fuel sources back and forth.

It's not a defeat by any means to curtail a fast, and then begin again- but it can be vital to take the essential time necessary (depending on the length and intensity of the initial fast) to begin afresh with everything going for you. Most especially, with your mind and body primed and ready ready to make the transition again, with minimal negative consequences. This is not a step backward, and if the initial fast was only for a 3 or 4 days, a short fresh-juice diet of a day or two could mitigate the strain of re-entry.

If you aren't familiar with the unmistakable differences between true and habitual hunger, I urge you to find out- Also, if you aren't clear about the processes we go through in the transition between regular meals and fasting, it's very important knowledge. I'm not trying to "get on your case", but reading your blog made me wonder if you're aware of a few key aspects of fasting.

I'll try and find you a link or two highlighting the process in and out of ketosis and the fasting metabolism, and I'll post what I can here.

If you're going to break your fast at all, it is much healthier to regroup on a juice diet, transitioning into vegetables, and re-nutrify yourself before beginning again. Cycling in and out of fasts covering several days, without preparing your body to make the transition again can become dangerous, "so I've heard" -but from reliable sources.

All that aside, I hope the rest of your fast goes as smoothly as possible, and may you get all the positive results you're after and more.

And here's a concise and well-researched book on fasting, that's been a big help to me - "Fasting and Eating for Health" -Fuhrman:

"Eat to Live" by Fuhrman is another excellent, no-BS book for after fasting too. Anyone who hasn't read that one doesn't know what they're missing- Fuhrman's done his homework on the globalizing Western diet (an unprecedented scourge) and nutrition like nobody else I'm aware of.

Here's a worthwhile public-domain book you can read right now- Don't let it put you off that it's nearly 100 years old, the author really knew her stuff. Take a look at chapter 10 for some useful information specifically pertaining to appetite and fast-breaking.
