Fear , guilt, persecution complex, and self rightousness, a potent mix, favoured by a lot of religious belief systems. Two of the greatest fears of humanity are the fear of death and the fear of being alone, religion seeks to play on both of these fears, if you join a religion, you are convinced that you will live on after death, (only if you believe and follow), and as long as you follow the belief system you will never be alone.
