Birds may indicate goals or dreams you have.
This goal or dream is IN YOUR HANDS.
Also it seems your daughter can help you realize it.
There are others though who apparently do not want
you to proceed with this.

Tree blocking the entrance to the birdcage, hmm,
tree is alive, bird is alive. In nature birds dwell in trees.
Perhaps this dream is telling you NOT to put the bird back in the cage? At least the tree and bird are sharing the same space.

Not sure how/if this relates to your former friend,
but this is what I get from your dream.
