Interesting article, but it doesn't touch on the full scope of this problem. The fact is, there are hundreds of varieties of "apicomplexan"
parasites like these which infect humans and animals. Most are not even characterized by our modern medical sciences.
I for one, have a mysterious bug like this which infects my prostate, and gut. Could be other areas or glands affected that I don't even know of.
Some of these intracellular
parasites are very specific to individual cells. My
parasite has been demonstrated to infect mast cells in vitro, however, I don't know if it occurs in the body.
What is known, is that they share the same ribosomal DNA as plasmodium falciparum which is the deadliest parasitic disease in the world [malaria].
