There's a serious misunderstanding amongst people pertaining to sulfur and Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane sulfur, also known as MSM sulfur. We receive a lot of inquiries here at Dherbs.com on the concerns of MSM sulfur due to people confusing MSM sulfur with so-called regular sulfur and the two are not remotely the same substance. Not at all! There's a very big difference between MSM sulfur and sulfur.

While they are both sulfur, their forms are different. MSM sulfur can be regarded as organic sulfur and thus 100% safe. This kind of sulfur can be safely and efficiently digested, absorbed, and assimilated by the human body.

Regular sulfur, also known as sulfur oxide and processed into sulfuric acid, is inorganic sulfur and is toxic and poisonous to the human body. This kind of sulfur cannot be digested, absorbed, and assimilated by the human body.

This is the kind of sulfur (as sulfuric acid) doctors used to prescribe to people back in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s that caused many adverse reactions, especially to people's skin. This kind of sulfur caused severe adverse skin reactions when applied to the external skin because the skin, as the body's largest organ of elimination, attempted to excrete the poisonous sulfur from the blood and since the skin is closest to the blood, the Body Intelligence usually chose the skin to eliminate the toxic substance. The skin was chosen over the other eliminative channels because sulfuric acid is actually dangerous inside the body, actually being fatal.

Sulfuric acid was used in topical ointments and creams to treat arthritic conditions and because the toxic substance was applied on the skin, it made its way through the skin and into the bloodstream and then the blood used this same point of entrance (the skin) to attempt to eliminate the toxic substance.

Many people, especially African-Americans, refer to sulfuric acid as sulfur, so when they hear about MSM sulfur, they ignorantly equate MSM sulfur with sulfuric acid which did many of them tremendous harm.

It's very easy to tell MSM sulfur from sulfur oxide. MSM Sulfur has a white color and sulfur (sulfur oxide) has a yellow color. This yellow color becomes clear when it is processed - made into sulfuric acid, an industrial product.

Sulfur. A nonmetallic, multivalent, tasteless, odorless chemical element that occurs abundantly in yellow crystalline form or in masses, especially in volcanic areas. Its atomic number is 16; its atomic weight is 32.06. It is used to produce sulfuric acid and used chemically in metallurgy, rubber vulcanization, petroleum refining, and many other industrial purposes. Sulfur has been used in the treatment of gout, rheumatism, and bronchitis and as a mild laxative. The sulfonamides, or sulfa drugs, are used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. Also spelled sulphur. Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 3rd edition, p. 1132

Sulfuric acid. A clear, colorless, oily, highly corrosive liquid that generates great heat when mixed with water. An extremely toxic substance, sulfuric acid causes severe skin burns, blindness on contact with the eyes, serious lung damage if the vapors are inhaled, and death if it is ingested. In industry, sulfuric acid is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, dyes, glues, and other acids, in the purifying of petroleum, and in the pickling of metals. Weak solutions of sulfuric acid are used in the treatment of gastric hypoacidity and serious diarrhea. It was formerly called 'oil of vitriol' and prescribed in the treatment of osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis , and ankylosing spondylitis. Mosby's supra, pgs. 1132-1133

Organic sulfur. An acid-forming mineral that is part of the chemical structure of the amino acids methionine, cysteine, taurine, and gluthione, sulfur disinfects the blood, helps the body to resist bacteria, and protects the protoplasm of cells. It aids in necessary oxidation reactions in the body, stimulates bile secretion, and protects against the harmful effects of radiation and pollution, sulfur slows down the aging process. It is found in hemoglobin and in all body tissues, and is needed for the synthesis of collagen, a principal protein that gives the skin its structural integrity. James F. Balch, Prescription For Nutritional Healing, p. 29

Organic sulfur, along with elements such as zinc, silicon (or silica), and biotin, is a beauty element due to its beneficial effect on the skin, fostering the structural integrity of the skin.

Sulfur is the key substance that makes garlic "king of herbs." However, there is a controversy with organic sulfur though specious in nature. Sulfur in onions is not responsible for making people cry when cutting an onion. Onions produce a chemical irritant, Syn-propanethial-S-oxide, which stimulates the eye's lachrymal glands so they release tears.

Syn-propanethial-S-oxide starts out as a substance called Lachrymatory-factor-synthase, a previously undiscovered enzyme discovered by the Japanese in 2002. When an onion is cut, lachrymatory-factor-synthase is released into the air. The Synthase enzyme converts the sulfoxides (amino acids) into Sulfenic acid. The unstable Sulfenic acid rearranges itself into Syn-ropanethial-S-oxide and this substance gets into the air and comes into contact with our eyes and our lachrymal glands become irritated and produce tears.

So it is not sulfur that makes our eyes water when we cut an onion. It is another substance.

MSM sulfur is considered 'dietary sulfur' and is chiefly derived from the lignin of pine trees. Lignin is a molecule in plants that is part of a plant's cell wall.

MSM sulfur or Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane is a relatively new dietary form (so-called 'supplement') of sulfur that is found in human tissue. It is a naturally-occurring nutrient found in the human diet, especially 'plant-based' diet and it gets into the diet via the sulfur cycle which occurs when ocean plankton release sulfur compounds which rise into the ozone where ultra-violet light makes MSM and DMSO (Di-Methyl Sulfoxide), which is a precursor to MSM. MSM and DMSO return to the surface of the Earth in rain whereby plants concentrate MSM and return it to the Earth and the sea. Evaporation into the air results in their return to the Earth.

MSM sulfur supports healthy connective tissues like tendons, muscle, and ligaments and thus is helpful for health challenges such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis , bursitis, gout, and muscle pain. The substance also removes toxins from the blood and lymphatic system.

Sulfur, in its organic nature, is present in all cells in sulfate forms which is formed when sulfur comes into contact with sodium, potassium, magnesium, and selenium.

Sulfur is found in human hair, skin, and nails. Ironically Dherbs.com has a compound (formula) called Hair-Skin-Nails that contains MSM sulfur.

Personally, I don't take as much MSM sulfur at present as I used to because it made my hair and nails grow too fast. A lot of women may want this effect, but not me. MSM sulfur will really make your hairs and nails grow.

Many amino acids, considered the building blocks of protein, have sulfur as a component. I'm telling you, this substance (MSM) is very profound and very important pertaining to human health and wellbeing. It has so many functions.

Sulfur is also needed for insulin production and thus is greatly recommended for so-called diabetics.

Arthritic conditions in many people have responded well to MSM ingested orally. So have athletic injuries, especially where there is tremendous pain. MSM is imperative for healing as it accelerates the healing process. This is why many professional athletes consume MSM sulfur when they are injured and need to recover quickly. MSM sulfur is great for athletic injuries.

MSM sulfur can be used for so many things: hair growth, nail growth (hand and toes), structural integrity of the skin; insulin production, healing of damaged tendons, ligaments, muscles, etc.; broken bones, pain; healing of arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, sprains, blindness; fertility enhancement (especially for males); blood purification, detoxification of the cells; removal of parasites and worms, nourish the male and female gonads, and so many other things.

Sulfur is a very important element of human optimal health and wellbeing and is a highly recommendable product by Dherbs.com. If you take Vitamin C, make sure you consume it with MSM sulfur because Vitamin C is dependent upon sulfur for absorption. At Dherbs.com, we added sulfur to our Vitamin C (capsules) so as to make things easy for people.

Sulfur-rich foods (live foods) include onions, garlic, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, sunflower seeds, lentils, soybeans, turnips, and beans (dried beans). Wheat germ oil also contains sulfur.

Sulfur-rich plants (also food, of course) include Horsetail, Alfalfa, Chaparral leaves, Burdock (root), Dandelion (leaves and root), Catnip, Garlic, Red Raspberry (leaves and berries), Lobelia, and Juniper berries to name a few.

Dherbs.com sells MSM sulfur in powdered form and capsule form. Each capsule is equivalent to 500 mg. and a person could take anywhere from 1,000 mg to 3,000 mg daily. But because MSM sulfur is safe, a person can actually take as much of it as they like. Powdered form is best! You can stir a teaspoon or tablespoon of MSM sulfur into organic orange juice and take daily.

Dherbs.com also uses MSM sulfur in the following compounds: Hair-Skin-Nails (capsules) and Vitamin C (capsules).

We also utilize the substance in our facial skin clays: Bentonite Clay, French Green Clay, and Moroccan Red Clay which is why our clays are very effective, especially in beautifying the skin and healing facial skin disorders such as blemishes, acne, white and blackheads, dermatitis, etc.

We also use MSM sulfur in our Neti Pot Salt.

And because sulfur is widely available for use today in chakra balancing, I'd be remiss to not cover uses of sulfur in this regard. Sulfur is a beautiful yellow color which means it is a beneficial stone to use for the 3rd chakra (solar plexus).

The 3rd chakra of the human energy system deals with issues of personal power, intelligence, ambition, drive, self-esteem and self-image, ego, and how one view themselves in the world - the world of man (the Matrix).

"Sulfur has a negative electrical charge and is extremely useful for absorbing negative energies, emanations, and emotions. Placed in the environment, it absorbs negativity of any kind and removes barriers to progress." Judy Hall

Sulfur should never be used to make an elixir, unless of course the sulfur piece is placed in a glass container or jar and placed in a bowl carrying the water (elixir), called the 'indirect method.' The properties of the sulfur will still impact the water this way and is best used externally.

But again, sulfur should never be used the normal way to make an elixir as sulfur is toxic. However, sulfur can be directly applied to the body for purposes of chakra balancing. It will not adversely affect the skin in this fashion. Usually during chakra balancing sessions clothes are worn so the sulfur piece sits on the clothing material and not the human skin directly.

And there you have it - correct information about sulfur!
