Dogs are social creatures and love to join the party. They take more time than cats and need boundaries, rules, training. They can easily play with cats too, once they learn to tone down their emotions as my neighbor's dog is great with cats and played with her two cats till they became ill.

Dogs have a lot of energy and need to be walked. It is not the same as playing with them in the backyard or house. Should be walked a half hour in the morn before work, and another walk after work, depending on how energised the dog is. After the walks they become more relaxed and easier to train.

Showing frustration or anger during training doesn't make the dog learn and just feeds negative emotions in the animal. 'The dog whisperer' is the best show I have seen for training dogs well and in most cases quickly. I don't have a dog as I don't have the time and health for one now, but I have tried some of the techniques with the neighbor's dog when walking him, and my parent's dog and it has worked real well. Also, the training techniques have to be done as a team so that the dog isn't getting mixed signals from both of you.

It sound as if your dog is playing too rough. It has to be stopped instantly or even better before it happens if you can tell if they are going to do it by the look on their face. But it should to be done calmly, without anger, or you can just be feeding the situation by the negative emotions. My cat used to play rough, but now I just say 'be nice' and he'll know he's going too far and stops.

But if you just don't have the time to put into walking the dog and training it, which I can understand as it is a lot of work, you should just come clean with your husband about it. It will be better for the dog to go into a home where it will get enough time and attention. And you could always get an older dog that is already trained, that just likes an occaisonal walk and enjoys snoozing in front of the tv.
