You are right.
You don't even have to go that far back in time, but you have chosen very good example.
In the far past, fasting was part of survival. Getting food was not always easy, and fasting was a way of preserving food and making it last longer, sometimes even for months ...
But, take a look at the last 2000 years, when we are more agrarian, and we don't depend 100% on hunting/gathering.
Most agrarian people were religious, at least the last 2000 years. And, all religions have long fasts, usually several times a year, and those fasts always end with a lot of fatty foods. A perfect example of liver flush.
By abandoning religion and customs, we have also forgotten that there could be more then one good reason why fasting is good.
Add to that higher level of physical activity of people living before industrial revolution, add to that clean food, add lack of vaccination, lack of dental work (root fillings, amalgam), add to that natural selection (weakest kids would die before age 15) and you understand why
