Neither do humans.  Wet nurses have been around since the beginning of time and have only fallen out of favor since the era of bottle formulas.  A wet nurse is perpetually giving milk - just like a cow, and there are still a few out there in the USA.  The ability of a human woman to remain in lactation is not limited to "a certain amount of time after giving birth."  In fact, human females can induce lactation - even if they have never given birth.
