Uh-oh...it should smell similar to clay or chalk...sort of dusty smelling. Was it a new bottle?...then take it back. If it wasn't a new bottle...how long have you had it and how have you been storing it? Had you previously opened it or was this the first time opened?
I don't know if it could be an agar...I'll try to find out.
