Mirena side effects - psoriatic arthritis?
Hi all,
I had a Mirena inserted in early 2008 for menorraghia caused by fibroids. It worked wonderfully at first. However, after about six months, when menstruation had all but ceased, I began to experience strange inflammation around one of my toenails and soreness on walking. Then came pain in the ball of one foot with swelling on the upper part of the same foot. Soon afterwards I had a sore wrist and badly swollen finger. Later there was pain on in balls of both feet making walking any distance difficult.
Psoriasis on my scalp also flared up for the first time in more than twenty years. When I noticed that the swollen finger reduced following one 'period', I began to investigate. Following a whole swathe of tests, doctors and expense I was diagnosed with suspected psoriatic
Arthritis and told that I should take Methotrexate. I was reluctant to embark on such a heavy drung and decided to try having the Mirena removed first. Post removal I regained mobility in my finger, the swelling went down and I could walk comfortably without anti-inflammatories. However, the foot pain has returned. I notice a reduction in foot pain during and post heavy menstrual bleeding - there must be some connection. Currently taking Chaste Tree to try and get some control of my still scrambled cycle. Three months post removal I have improved slightly but still have swollen toe joints and pain in the balls of my feet. Does anyone know how long it takes to recover, or if recovery necessarily occurs? I am furious about this - both my mobility and manual dexterity have been affected by what I was told was a harmless drug. Naturally neither the Gyn.nor the Rheumatologist think that the symptoms are related to the Mirena. My first suspicions were confirmed by the plethora of reports about arthritis-like symptoms on this website so thanks to all for the heads up about this.
