Re: Health Care Reform & Health Care Jobs - opinions?
I'm scared out of my wits to be honest. If I lose my job, our house is soon to follow. I was talking to a friend who says Obama's plan is really just to offer cheaper insurance to people, but I'm assuming that insurance is not going to pay out as much for office visits and procedures, and current private practice docs will have to cut staff, cut pay, etc. to keep costs down as a result. That's how I understand it so far, anyway, but I really don't know the details. I'm also wondering if anyone is considering what caliber of people will be drawn to working in health care for low wages if that happens. You hear stories about 7 dollar an hour nurse's aids working in nursing homes who are fresh out of jail or whatever and mistreating the residents, or worse.
I have to admit I haven't been happy in my work for a long time, but it's been a good gig, i get to work at home, and while that has benefits and drawbacks, it's allowed me a level of flexibility I needed, and is the only reason we could afford our mortgage. I've been wanting to make a change, but I'm unprepared... I don't know what my next move would be yet. It would have to be something brilliantly entrepreneurial because I don't have the time or resources to go back to school at my age to re-train for something else. Actually my dream would be an alternative healing center that is sort of a multi-faceted biz to house bodywork, natural health consultations, movement classes, lectures, community events, a health food cafe, boutique, etc. It's a pipe dream, but I was really inspired by this awesome place I visited in Santa Fe called "Body." I loved the concept, but I think I'd need to hit the lottery to make it happen in metro Detroit.
