o/t my husband saved our lives last night

whoa, I just have to write this out.

First I'll tell you what I experienced, then I'll tell you what happened. We were on the highway after leaving friends last night. I was very tired, had been up since 5 AM and was dozing off. My husband hit the throttle, I heard a very loud screech. My husband veered into the fast lane. From what I could see we were the only ones on the road so I didn't know what was going on...although my husband is the absolute best driver I've ever known, so I didn't think that he was having a break with reality or anything(go, speed racer, go...). All of a sudden there was an SUV CLIMBING THE SOUND WALL and PASSING us on the right hand side of us. The SUV climbed the wall, rolled in front of us and came to a stop. My cool, calm and collected hubby pulled over to the side of the road.

Apparently what happened was this SUV was going REALLY fast, gaining on us. My husband hit the throttle and then veered into the fast lane to get away from this m*o*o*n, the SUV locked it's brakes. He slammed into the center divider behind us, lost his front tires and bumper, ricochetted off the center divider, arced around us, hit the wall, and rolled.

This guy was going WAY TOO FAST. He didn't see us until he was on our bumper, he HAD to have been drunk or on drugs. There was NOONE else on the road. We were in the SLOW lane, we were going the speed limit. It was like this thing came from out of nowhere.

So, all of a sudden there were more cars and people, no collisions. The guy in the SUV seemed to be ok, he got out and was squatting by the side of the road, the cops were called.

My husband did EXACTLY the right thing, made the perfect maneuvers to save us from injury or death. That, combined with the angles of the divider and sound wall, prevented us from even getting a scratch on our car(subaru outback).

BTW, when I saw the SUV climbing the wall, I started screaming. Don't know where that came from, I was freaked out. My husband had to tell me to shut up.

I was also in a near miss once, on wet rainy infamous highway 17 in the Santa Cruz mountains. I came around one of the insane corners and a guy that had passed me had crashed. I made exactly the right maneuvers to avoid hitting him or anything else. But last night, as a sleeping passenger, I was completely out of control and ignorant as to what was going on. So I freaked.

I've read stuff on who survives, and who doesn't. Those that survive alway have an escape plan formulated. In terms of driving, that means always being aware of a safe place to get to, for instance, the center lane on a three lane highway is the safest, you have two lanes from which to choose. This was an extreme situation though, this guy came from NOWHERE, was going REALLY fast. Was he texting? Swigging from the bottle?

I am so grateful that I've got such a wonderful husband. I trust him with my life. BTW, he also saved us and our neighbors houses from burning down, but that's another story.

I can't help but compare him to my X. My X had spit out the window of his van(so he thought). The window was closed. He was watching the spit trail down the window and rear-ended the woman in front of him.

I chose wisely:)

And, I fully support harsh penalties for those caught driving under the influence. We could have been injured or killed, through absolutely no fault of our own. It is due to the the fact that my husband is ALWAYS aware that we are fine, just still kind of shaky and exhausted from the adrenalin surge.
