The writer starts out that this used to belong on the Conspiracy pages - it still does - Depleted Uranium (Uranium-238 has been all over the world since the Earth's crust was formed from the primevial soup (and before since it is molten uranium that keeps the core of the Earth hot)

The article by Robert J Zieve, MD, is a mish mash of nearly every myth about depleted uranium that began with Saddam Hussein's highly successful propaganda campaign in about 1992 - Let's look at it in just a little more detail starting at the beginning

Because it is aerosolized, it can travel great distances from where it is used to penetrate armor in a war. - DU is the most dense material found on the battlefield - DU dust falls out of the air within 25-100 meters of the point of impact. This has been tested by the International Atomic Energy Agency's team of scientists in Kuwait. Their results are posted here

Depleted Uranium kinetic energy penetrator rounds were developed after the 1973 War - they were not used in that war because they were not needed (they were developed to penetrate modern Soviet tank armor, the Egyptian and Syrian armies did not have modern tanks - their tanks were WW-II/Korean War vintage and steel armor piecing shells would penetrate their armor) and because they did not exist. then in the Gulf War in 1990-91, and continues to be used today.

DU was used in the Gulf War, in 2003 in Iraq and in the 90's in the Balkans to destroy Serbian tanks. No one is fighting tanks anywhere today. The next time that DU would be used (if ever again because it is becoming obsolete) would be if the North Korean army's tanks started crossing the 38th Parallel to reopen the Korean War. DU is not being used in Iraq or Afghanistan today because there are no targets. DU is used only in kinetic energy penetrators, long small diameter rods fired from tank and certain aircraft cannon. DU is not used in bombs and DU is useless against any other target than a tank.


Gulf War veterans were found to have DU in their clothing, bodies, and semen; 67 percent of them have offspring with birth defects.

This entire sentence is false. DU was not found in clothing. It washes out. DU has been found in a very small number (less than 75) of soldiers who were hit by pieces of DU shrapnel in friendly fire incidents. Not a single one of these soldiers has gotten sick or had any ill health effects from DU. DU has never been found in semen, but it sounds really horrifying doesn't it? No soldiers have had offspring with birth defects caused by DU. (One makes that claim, but it is false)

Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and chronic neurological conditions are much more common among them than in the general public.

These may be Gulf War Syndrome (Gulf War Illness is the name that this was given in 2008) symptoms, but DU has been found to have nothing to do with GWI.

Lauren Moret, eminent scientist, has stated that DU is the main cause of Gulf War Syndrome.

"Leuren" (there is no "Lauren") Moret is not an eminent scientist. Moret has a BS in Geology and to my knowledge has never actually worked or taught as a Geologist. Moret has no knowledge of what causes Gulf War Syndrome, but is a very active self-promoter and seller of snake oil in her travelling medicine show. Moret is a superb show woman but her talks are peppered with lies.
