I believe that he suffers from what we in Australia call "the tall poppy syndrome". For whatever reason ML is unable to understand basic scientific theory, be it a lack of intelligence, a lack of education, or willfull ignorance, he feels the need to cut down those that do, decrying them as "educated beyond their intelligence", "worldly educated", "decieved", "agents of satan" etc. ML uses this name calling as a defence mechanism when he wont or can't admit to being wrong. This syndrome is somewhat related to an inferiority complex.

I do realise that he was trying to make a joke by using this example to prove scientific evidence to be useless, the joke is not original, I've heard this example used many many times.
