Bro sounds like the prototypical "it's not my fault" weinie. I'm sure that nothing has ever been his fault. He needs to take a long hard look at himself- there are young lives that depend on him.

Is there anyone that can intervene? A minister, social services, a DENTIST? Because it's not about him and your relationship with him at this point, unless he makes major changes I would guess that your relationship with him is not beneficial for YOU.

Tough situation though, possible that you could completely alienate them and then have no influence on the child.

But that will probably be the best thing as there is no surer way to sickness than a mouth full of diseased teeth.

The kid is bright, you say. Then I say that the kid knows that he is not being taken care of, and I predict that you will see that he will take care of himself when the time comes. Humans really are remarkably adaptable and remarkably strong.

I know your plate is full. Perhaps you can find a way to spend some one on one time with this child? Take him hiking or...? Once a month? Become his "big brother"?
