I wonder if this would have anything to due with overweight or obese people suffering more, and the death rate being higher, when they contract swine flu.

Possible, but I would think the problem would be more that they have harder time trying to get sufficient oxygen in the first place due to the higer strain on the cardio-pulmonary system.
