There are indeed various types of laser and laser can give good results for some people. Basically what it does is relies on the difference in color between the hair and your skin and is really designed to exploit the difference between very black hair and very fair skin. The dark hair absorbs the heat of the laser more than the fair skin and is burned to a frazzle, damaging (or hopefully destroying) the root in the process. The long-term effects on the skin (over decades) is unknown and the less the contrast between the color of your hair and the color of your skin the less effective laser can be without seriously burning your skin as well.

Neither laser nor electrolysis are foolproof ways of removing hair growth that's hormonally-driven, though.

Saw palmetton will increase your estrogen levels and will help counteract testosterone. It's a well-known feminising agent. Long term implications re breast and uterine cancer (both of which can sometimes be related at least in part to estrogen levels) are not known.

There are various preparations which may slow down hair growth for some people, the best known being the commercial preparation Vaniqa.

For me (though granted my growth is heavy) they're all a lot more trouble/risky than simply shaving.
