Moonie, a couple of other enema tips you might wish to consider to enhance the comfort and effectiveness of a cleansing enema:

1. Always start with pure filtered or warmed bottled water. Then add salt or Ivory or castile soap as desired. I personally don't recommend baking soda, although I know it's often a popular additive. I only recommend a soap solution enema for constipation relief, and not more than once a week.

2. Make sure the temperature of the solution is neither too hot or too cold. Just above body temperature, or about 100 - 103 degrees F (39 C) at preparation time is just right.

3. Don't hang the bag too high. That can cause uncomfortable pressure that results in cramping. Usually, 1 1/2 to 2 feet above the level of your hips is just about right. Breathe slowly and deeply as the solution flows.

4. Position the shutoff on the tubing so that you can reach it while taking the enema. Don't hesitate to stop the flow if you begin to feel too full, or if you feel a cramp. Take short shallow breaths (pant like a dog) until the cramp subsides, and then resume the flow.

5. After you have taken the desired amount of solution, if it's not too uncomfortable, try to hold it in for a few minutes before evacuating. This gives the water a chance to work to soften and loosen hardened stool.

Try to time the enema if possible so that you can relax or take a nap afterwards.
